Why do wisdom teeth need removal?

Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last teeth to emerge at the back of the mouth, usually between the ages of 17 and 21. Unfortunately, your adult teeth have emerged at this age, so your wisdom teeth rarely have sufficient space to come in properly. Many wisdom teeth remain trapped (impacted) in the gums or barely break through the gums (partial impaction). Although not all wisdom teeth need removal, Dr. Elloway will recommend removal if they cause:

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Trap food, which can cause infections
  • Damage to neighboring teeth
  • Dental crowding or misalignment
  • Cyst formation or other complications

If your wisdom teeth erupt properly and don’t pose a threat to your oral health, removal may not be necessary. However, Dr. Elloway may still recommend extraction if there’s a high risk of future complications. We believe in avoiding potential issues to protect your long-term dental health.

What should I expect during wisdom teeth extraction?

Dental extractions may sound intimidating, but they’re often simpler than expected. We prioritize your comfort by combining gentle care with advanced pain management techniques to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Examination: Dr. Elloway will use digital X-rays to determine your tooth’s location and condition. Advanced imaging lets us choose the safest, most effective way to extract your tooth.
  • Making you comfortable: We’ll numb your gums with local anesthesia for a comfortable experience. However, if you are anxious about the procedure, we’ll discuss sedation dentistry. We’ll only proceed with treatment when you are entirely at ease.
  • Extraction: If the tooth is easily accessible in the mouth, a simple extraction is all that is needed. Dr. Elloway gently loosens your tooth from its socket and pulls it out in one piece. If the tooth is partially or wholly impacted, it must be removed surgically. This involves incising your gums and sectioning the tooth for easier removal.

Your comfort is our top priority during and after tooth extraction. Once the procedure is complete, we’ll provide simple aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery. From managing discomfort to choosing the right foods and maintaining oral hygiene, we’ll guide you every step of the way. Most patients are back to their regular activities within a few days.
