Literally no one in the history of going to the dentist has ever had “get a root canal” on their bucket list. But sometimes they’re necessary, and Dr. Randal S. Elloway likes to frame it as a positive. The treatment’s comfortable (the horror stories of the past are long gone), and most importantly, you can save your natural tooth with his help.
The root canal procedure’s not as mysterious as you may think. Inside your tooth, there’s a soft area called pulp. When pulp becomes infected or damaged, it must be removed. Failure to address this can lead to even more damage, not just to your teeth, but also to an infection that could spread throughout your body.
During the root canal procedure, Dr. Elloway removes the infected tissue and cleans the root canals. After ensuring that all the decay and debris are cleared out, he fills the space with a special material to seal it. This process is similar to getting a regular dental filling, but it requires accessing deeper areas of the tooth to treat the infection thoroughly.
Several clear signs indicate you may need this treatment to repair your tooth.
If you decide to use sedation, you need to arrange for a friend to drive you home unless you’re just going with nitrous oxide. Write down any questions you have in advance so you can ask Dr. Elloway or his team.Â
Here’s what happens during a root canal:
Stick to soft foods for a couple of days to avoid hurting the tooth. If you experience any soreness, over-the-counter pain medication usually provides the relief you need. Follow every instruction our team gives you. Most patients get back to their normal schedule within a day or so.
After the root canal treatment, you may need a crown to cover the tooth. A crown adds strength to the tooth structure. It also protects your tooth from breaking when you chew your food. Crowns can help restore the full function of your bite.
Dr. Elloway and his team are available to answer any questions you have about your root canals and crowns. To schedule an appointment at Randal S. Elloway, DDS, Inc., call (530) 527-6777 for the Red Bluff office. If you prefer Chico, call (530) 527-6777 today.
