When do I need a dental crown?

A crown is a customized appliance that covers the visible portion of your tooth. It’s created to match the exact specifications of your tooth to create a functional yet realistic appearance. Although tiny, a dental crown has several uses in dentistry.

Some include:

  • Repair damage: A dental crown can restore a tooth that has been cracked, chipped, or severely worn down. It covers and protects the remaining healthy structure, allowing the tooth to function normally again.
  • Strengthening: We can use a crown to reinforce a tooth weakened by trauma, root canal treatment, or natural wear. The crown encases the tooth, distributing bite forces evenly and preventing further damage.
  • Replace missing teeth: We can pair dental crowns with implants or bridges to fill gaps left by one or multiple missing teeth.
  • Aesthetics: Crowns can improve the appearance of misshapen, discolored, or damaged teeth. They are custom-designed to blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth for a natural, attractive smile.

Delivering exceptional results with crowns requires the perfect blend of premium materials, artistic skill, and cutting-edge technology. Our office combines these elements to create crowns that look natural, perform flawlessly, and stand the test of time.

The dental crown procedure: What can I expect?

Many crowns are replaced in one visit within two hours. First, Dr. Elloway will examine your tooth with X-rays to determine its suitability for crown treatment. If so, our team will carefully reshape your tooth by removing enamel around it. We also remove any decayed/damaged portions for a healthy foundation. If your tooth is severely damaged, we’ll need to rebuild it to create a sturdy foundation for your crown to attach.

After preparation, we’ll take precise scans of your tooth. These scans guide our dental lab in fabricating a crown that matches the exact specifications of your tooth. Creating your crown takes a few weeks. In the meantime, we’ll protect your prepped tooth with a temporary crown.

During your second appointment, we’ll remove the temporary restoration and try your new crown. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit. The final step is to secure your crown with durable adhesives.

Are dental crowns worth it?

Need a dental crown? Here are the benefits you can look forward to:

  • Enhanced oral function: You can chew or bite without lingering pain or discomfort. This helps you enjoy a wider selection of foods—you are no longer limited to soft, easy-to-chew foods.
  • Better aesthetics: A damaged tooth can detract from your smile. Dental crowns repair damage and restore the aesthetics of your smile.
  • Preserve your teeth: Dental crowns can restore even significantly damaged teeth, eliminating the need for extraction.
  • Confidence boost: Smile, eat, and laugh without holding back.
  • Stronger teeth: Dental crowns make your teeth less prone to future breakdowns.

Dental Bridges Smiling Faces

A bridge is a non-surgical way to replace one or many teeth. A bridge uses the adjacent teeth as anchors to support the missing tooth or teeth. With today’s dental advancements, a bridge can be fabricated in a fairly short period of time, using a metal or nonmetal foundation. Don’t let that missing tooth affect the way you speak, eat, and smile. Bridges yield immediate results that last a lifetime. Ask your dentist what type of bridge may be right for you.
